How to Join – Eligibility

Find out what it takes to serve in the Air Guard

Eligibility

Once you make the decision to join the Air Guard, we make sure you meet eligibility requirements and measure your aptitude to determine which positions you qualify for.

Am I Eligible?

In order to be considered eligible to join the Air Guard, you must first meet basic physical requirements. Recruiters will measure your height and weight, make sure you fall within the appropriate age range, and evaluate your medical history to determine whether you’re healthy enough to serve.

In addition, the Air Guard requires that all members be in good standing with the law, and has rules regarding body alterations and past drug use.

All members must meet the minimum education requirement. Requirements for members with advanced degrees, and active duty service members and civilians with prior service experience, could vary. Be sure to discuss any eligibility concerns you have with a recruiter.

What's the ASVAB?

ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. It's the timed multi-aptitude exam that all military applicants must take. You must achieve at least a minimum acceptable score in the combined areas of Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Mathematics to be eligible to join.

Your ASVAB scores will also determine which Air Force Specialties are open to you after you join. For questions about the test and how to prepare for it, be sure to talk to your recruiter.
